While only a few schools here are featured, there are plenty others. These schools are spread far and wide, and operate on a yearly budget of $350,000. That money is shared for lunches, books, and medical care (including vaccinations) for some of the children. Unfortunately, we cannot feed and treat all of them, but it is a goal we are striving to reach. All of the schools referenced are very simple: catering to the basic educational needs of the students. We rent available space and provide activities for the children to keep them off the streets, create structure, and prevent the children from falling victim to gang violence, prostitution and transmission of AIDS. (In sub-Saharan Africa, transmission of AIDS is 60% less likely among children who are in school.) We also cater to their physical needs, providing a meal. Thanks to an Italian Foundation, we will begin a new school here in Cite Soleil. The community gives us the locale rent free, and together with the community we will make a school happen here. We will call it "St Ambrose", after the patron of

St. Alphonsus:
This is a semi-abandoned site in Cite Soleil, in an area called Lento. It was built about 20 years ago and has been largely neglected due to the strife and violence of the surrounding area. We are looking to make a second school here, thanks to the same Italian foundation. This place already has a name: St Alphonsus. We will respect this longtime name, and start another elementary school here in September.
